The honest part: tourist SIMs exist, resident plans do not yet
Airports and the big travel eSIM apps all sell tourist data. I will not pretend otherwise.
What actually blocks you is the other thing: until the ward office prints your address into your residence card, you cannot sign up for resident plans from Docomo, au, SoftBank or LINEMO. Schools often only help on orientation day. Land at Narita on a Friday night and nobody is opening a phone contract for you.
So I sell a 14 to 30 day Japan data bridge (longer options too) that you install before flying. Switch data on when you land; maps, chat and trains just work. After your address is stamped, move to LINEMO or Rakuten. The bridge is not the destination.
From landing to the first day of class, stay online
The night you land
Narita or Haneda arrivals. Switch data on and you are online, no hunting for airport Wi-Fi.
The first two weeks
Yamanote line, ward office, apartment hunting. Every step needs data; resident plans are not available yet.
First day of class
A photo at the Akamon gate, then in you go. The bridge eSIM carries the whole first semester rush.
Once you are settled
Address stamped into the residence card? Get LINEMO or Rakuten, delete the bridge. Done.

For light use I would start with 3 GB for 30 days at $7.45. Most people through the paperwork weeks take 10 GB for 30 days at $12.72. Heavy user? The lowest price per GB is 15 GB for 30 days at $16.54. Every number comes from the store table.

Can't I just buy data at the airport?
You can. Narita, Haneda and Kansai all sell tourist SIMs, and the big travel eSIM apps work too. The catch is the other path: until your address is printed in your residence card, you cannot sign up for resident plans from Docomo, au, SoftBank or LINEMO.
Why can't my school help before the semester starts?
Many schools only take you phone-shopping on or after orientation day. If you land on a Friday night, nobody is around all weekend, and you already need maps and messaging. Install the eSIM before you fly and just switch data on when you land.
Is this a year-long 090 number plan?
No. This is a short-term Japan data bridge, 14 to 90 days, data first. After your address is stamped and your residence registration is done, get a long-term plan like LINEMO or Rakuten. Delete the bridge when you are done.
How do I pay?
